Ellie

Ellie came to Farmfari in what was described as ‘paddock condition’, a term often used to describe a horse that is not in particularly good shape. She was in much need of tender, loving care and good feeding. She was very thin, had very little muscle, had open skin sores and a rubbed out mane. She was very distrusting of humans. When being backed out of the float, the previous owner warned us to stay back as she was not happy – we could hear her stomping in the float. The minute she was off, she looked around, gave out a massive sigh and started to lick and chew – she knew she was in a good place!!

Brom

Brom and Hally were the first horses to join us at Farmfari. Brom had been taken in by a horse rescue in Lovedale as she had previously raced and then been used as a brood mare, but was now deemed too old (at 14). If she hadn’t been taken in, she may well have found her way to the salesyards and into the hands of the doggers. She is the most amazing horse with a wonderful intelligence and sense of humour. She is also food preparation supervisor, watching from the barn door.

Bob

Bob came to us as a number, without a name. From the trotting industry he was booked onto a truck going to the abattoir. He came to us with a bad ankle injury and a bad attitude. He would randomly kick out and had a defensive and aggressive side. Over time he learned how to be a horse and to trust He is inquisitive and has foal-like tendencies (teeth clacking and lack of spatial awareness) Can seem pushy, but is also very sweet.

Chas

Chas is a true gentleman Good natured and friendly a big brother to the herd.

Mentoring Bob in the ways of the world. Very friendly and loves his treats. He was a much loved family member, who was bred and stayed with his mother his whole life, until at the age of 16, his human family could no longer keep him and they wanted to ensure he had a safe and loving forever home. He joined us and is thoroughly enjoying his retirement.

Kirra

Kirra is a truly special lady. She is gentle and caring and loves humans. Quiet and gentle, affectionate, beautiful nature, full of fun and very friendly.

Sensitive to others and has such a joie de vivre. Which is hard to understand given her background of cruelty and abuse. She was rescued when a horse trainer saw her down being beaten in a washbay resulting in multiple injuries leaving scars to this day.

Nahvi

Nahvi is a stunning paint horse, who came to us through her owner who was instrumental in setting up the rehabilitation process at Farmfari. An ex-barrelracer, Nahvi is now retired and living a quiet life away from the competition. She is friendly and a little shy and has a real love for Chas, who is more than happy to reciprocate. Nahvi left us in 2023, but has never been forgotten as we see her regularly with her original family.

Amber

Amber appears aloof but is really quite friendly once she trusts you, otherwise quite timid with people.

She communicates without touch but loves treats in the hand

She is the herd scout and look-out - always alert and reacting to surroundings. She was saved from the doggers at a horse sale by a horse rescue in Lovedale. There is no knowledge of her history but she had clearly suffered at the hands of humans prior to her rescue.

Hally

Hally with Brom was the first horse to join us. She is very special and very much the meeter and greeter of the herd. Very friendly and loves attention and being close with humans. She watches and understands everything. She is very bonded with her full-sister Elsie who joined us a number of years after Hally. Hall, along with her half-sister Belle, was surrendered to a horse rescue during the drought of 2019, where her breeder could no longer provide the food to keep them going.

Elsie

Hally's full sister but 4 years older. They are very bonded.

She is a squealer, she often sounds like something from Jurassic park with other horses. She was for sale on Gumtree and at risk of going to the meat industry, seeing her eyes, I felt an immediate connection and I could tell she was related to Hally - when she arrived they recognised each other immediately and ran to one another and embraced lovingly, even though they had not seen each other for at least 5 years.

Belle

Belle is a very gently and shy girl. Half-sister to both Hally and Elsie. She was surrendered to a horse rescue during the 2019 drought. No one could approach her at the rescue, but immediately came and engaged when I went to meet her. It was the first time she had allowed contact. She was saved from the doggers at a horse sale by a horse rescue in Lovedale. There is no knowledge of her history but she had clearly suffered at the hands of humans prior to her rescue.

Penny

Penny is a feisty mother mini-shetland pony. She came to us from the RSPCA, who had rescued her and her herd from an abandoned property, where they had been neglected and forgotten. Unbeknown to us, she arrived expecting a foal (she hid it well). Within three months of her being here, Penny had become Penny and Howie!!

Howie

Howie, the blue-eyed cremello mini was born on the property. He was the unexpected foal of a rescued mini-shetland Penny. He is extremely friendly, loves a rub and a scratch and is finally through his foal bitey phase
He loves to gallop and frolic and is just learning his butt swing and kick manoeuvre

Leonard

Leonard came to us with Penny, rescued by the RSPCA from an abandoned property. He and Penny are very bonded and he was chief protector when young Howie was born. Despite his size, he is able to command his position and share food with the biggest of the horses in the herd. Very impressive attitude.

Chungus

Chungus was named by the young boys next door. They were asked if they would like to name any of the minis and they wanted to name the ‘most biggest’ Chungus – of course we had to say yes, and so Chungus it is!! Chungus is a beautiful natured, friendly mischievous boy. Always keen for a neck scratch and cuddle. Loves to gallop and leap in the paddocks and has a fun loving side that is infectious – he seems to love to make you laugh and is happy in your company.

Snickers

Snickers was the friendliest from day 1. Whilst he had never had human interaction, he was the first to realise that humans were friends not foes and immediately engaged for itchy scratchies and grooming. He was the first to take to halter training and loves being with children.

Twirl

Quiet, sweet, gentle Twirl. Twirl was very young when she arrived and was very wary of humans. She would always hang back and avoid anyone if she could. After weeks of gentle bonding without any pressure, she eventually came around and now will gently interact. She and Howie are a team and will often be found following each other around and sharing a bucket.

Buttons

Sweet little Buttons – Buttons is the youngest of the minis and was in a very poor state when he arrived. Tiny and quite frail but with a massive woolly coat and dreadlocks. He soon realised that being hand-fed was the way to go to gain some strength and to grow. He still has his dreadlocks (for now) and so is also called Pirate!! For all his size, he is the first to run to defend the herd if any perceived danger appears, proving its all about attitude!!

Picnic- Nico

Nico is a very handsome young man, loves to play fight with Howie the mini-shetland foal, who despite being younger and smaller in height, stands his ground and will play for hours. He was initially very shy when he arrived and had no idea how to interact with humans, but soon came around and now loves his pats and strokes (not to mention his treats!!)
