Hoofbeats of Health: How to Maintain Healthy Hooves in Senior Sanctuary Horses

Farm Animal Sanctuary

When you picture a horse galloping freely across a paddock, it’s easy to forget just how much those hooves do. For every step, jump, or gentle stroll to the hay feeder, a horse’s hooves bear incredible weight and as our beloved horses age, caring for those hooves becomes one of the most important parts of keeping them happy and pain-free.

At Farmfari Sanctuary, our senior sanctuary horses are treasured family members. Many came from neglect or hardship, arriving with overgrown, cracked, or damaged hooves. Through time, patience, and expert care, we’ve watched those hooves – and the horses who stand on them — transform.

Why Hoof Health Matters for Senior Horses

As horses age, circulation slows, joints stiffen, and their hooves naturally change in texture and growth rate. This means issues like cracks, thrush, or laminitis can appear more easily. A healthy hoof supports:

  • Mobility — allowing older horses to move comfortably around their paddocks.
  • Posture and balance — crucial for horses managing arthritis or other age-related changes.
  • Overall wellbeing — because pain in the feet can quickly affect appetite, mood, and social behaviour.

Neglecting hoof care can lead to chronic pain or even permanent lameness, especially in horses rescued from poor conditions. That’s why routine care and observation are at the heart of what we do.

The Farmfari Approach: Step-by-Step Hoof Care for Our Senior Horses

1. Regular Farrier Visits

Our farrier visits every 4–6 weeks, ensuring trims are gentle and suited to each horse’s individual needs. Some older horses grow hoof walls unevenly, so our farrier works slowly, taking care not to stress joints or tendons.

  • We use soft standing mats during trims to ease pressure.
  • Horses who are nervous about hoof handling are gently desensitised over time, often with the help of our volunteers’ quiet patience.

2. Nutrition from the Ground Up

Healthy hooves start inside the body. Our seniors receive balanced diets rich in biotin, zinc, and omega-3s, which promote hoof strength and growth. Access to clean, dry grazing areas reduces the risk of bacterial infections in damp weather.

3. Terrain and Pasture Management

Uneven ground can wear hooves naturally, but too much moisture or hard impact can cause cracks. We carefully rotate paddocks, maintaining dry resting areas and shaded zones for relief during hot NSW summers.

4. Hoof Soaks and Preventative Care

In wet months, our team performs weekly hoof soaks with gentle antiseptic solutions to prevent thrush and bacteria. We also check for:

  • Temperature differences between hooves
  • Changes in gait
  • Unusual odours or discharge

These early signs can help us catch issues before they become painful.

The Healing Power of Trust

Some of our senior horses arrive frightened, never having had positive handling or proper care. Re-establishing trust is just as important as the physical treatment.

At Farm Fari, every hoof trim becomes a small act of connection — a moment when the horse realises it’s safe. Through gentle handling, routine, and love, even the most anxious rescue can learn to relax again.
